I'm Elliot; I'm 22 years old and a PhD student at UCLA. I grew up in New York, but I'm currently living in Los Angeles. I'm an author and poet looking to work collaboratively with a composer to put a background track to audio recordings of me reading my book On Being Insane. Released in October 2017 as my first professionally published book, "On Being Insane: in search of my missing pieces" is a lyrical and literary creative nonfiction piece (alternatively, it could be described as an experimental memoir) that chronicles the latter two years of my college experience as an autistic individual, struggling with mental illness and seeking answers to questions of identity, ability, and the meaning of human connections. It is very brief. Its length qualifies as a short novella; it has a word count similar to Kafka's "The Metamorphosis", but is much less dense. The book is written in nonlinearly organized fragments, and divided into sections that are loosely related. It travels by poetic logic. As I have been told by quite a few people now that there is something particularly special about the effect of me reading my own work, I'm beginning to record audio versions of the book. I would like to collaborate with a composer who can offer a musical background track. I checked the boxes for this project based on my ascertainment of what would be a good fit. That said, I will provide a great deal of latitude for you to make your creative decisions; I will make suggestions as to which parts of the reading I think would do well with musical background (certainly not the whole book will have a background track, only a few pieces of it) and you can take it from there. A large percentage of the musical pieces will probably come in the form of transitions between fragments or between sections. It's more than a "just for fun" endeavor, because I am already making money from the book, but I am exploring the options for how this will be released. My goal is to reach a large audience.
