The Mariner

Verse 1:

Every child who lived by sea has heard the accursed tale

Of the cursed evils that live in the darkest depths

The sailors all, they tell the tale of how the water groans

And how the mariner lost his life, his friends, his home, his love

Woe

Woe the sailors lost

Woe

Lament the trove of joy

The Boy was young and full of excitement to set sail

The thrill of exploration burned a hole into his heart

The Capt’n roared a mighty voice to gather up his crew

And when the Boy got on the ship his fate had been ensured

No

No sleep for those who’re damned

No

No hope for those who’re dead

Verse 2:

Every mother birthed a sailor dreads the day they leave

For the tale of the blackened waters took their loves away

The Taniwha protects the island of the ruined king

Whose treasures said to cure the dead and bring the breath of life

Oh

The boy’s home to the sea

Oh

The dark ones guard their lands

As the Boy worked his days, he found his heart was soft

He lived for life, was always kind to those who would be hard

As night time came he faced the moon and said his daily prayer

He prayed “Oh lord, I’ll come to you with treasure in my hands”

Low

The depths of darkened blue

Low

The chants of those undead

Bridge 1a:

The ship is nearing where they set themselves to go

The guardians of the ocean hear the prayers of the men

Masking fear with looks of hate is the sailors’ bane

For nothing can hold back the screams of death about to come

Verse 3:

The Boy had been oblivious to what the ocean held

Until he heard the other men exchange their tales so grand

When talk had spread of their arrival to the haunted grounds

The Boy was neither struck with fear nor wished for home’s return

Go

The Umibōzu waits

Go

Go forth unto the land

From ship to shore the Boy would think and ponder what he heard

For he had never heard such things, no wild tales before

Whence on the shore the crew could feel the Demons drawing near

Till one poor soul could bear no more and beat himself through fear

Flows

The blood of those who long

Flows

The water through the soul

Bridge 1b:

The Boy he wonders if it wise to leave his home

But dread is not enough to keep his soul at bay

Masking fear with happiness to hide the empty shell

For what good man could watch his brothers die at their own hands

Bridge 2a:

Fall into the ocean’s abyss

Make right the wrongs in your life

The Monks of the Ocean curse the ones who speak their names

Feign your joy and none to know

Bridge 2b:

Flee the land and run into the sea

Stronger men have tried and failed to break the curse

Make amends to lovers end and kiss to good farewell

When everyone you once had loved will love you nevermore

Verse 4:

The Boy sat on the ship alone with not a soul

He cut his ears still the voices tortured his young soul

He thought of home but had no hope of any safe return

The voices said, “You’re already dead, you have no one to love”

No

No sleep for those who’re damned

Low

The chants of those undead

The Boy could no more handle what the demons had to say

He took the anchor off the deck and tied his life away

And with a plunge his life was done, the Demons had their prey

And all the Boy could think of was the life he’d never see

Woe

Woe the sailors lost

Woe

Lament the trove of joy

Outro:

Every child who lived by sea has heard the accursed tale

Of the cursed evils that live in the darkest depths

The sailors all, they tell the tale of how the water groans

And how the Boy lost his life, and how his Demons won
