Lost on a Back Road

This is a song that won a Top 5 Winner spot in the Lyrics Only category of the Great American Song Contest in 2014.

VERSE 1:

I heard the sound of his four-wheel Bronco tires

Churning up gravel and teenage desires

Weatherman said it was record heat

That night in July as I jumped in the seat

Grabbed his ballcap and put it on

Smiled and said “Let’s get lost. C’mon!”

We tore down a dirt road, windows rolled down

That hat was lost to the wind and the woods all around.

CHORUS:

I lost more than a hat

On that old country back road

I thought I’d found everything

My young heart could hold

But looking back down that back road again

I can’t get back what I lost in red dust on the wind

So much lost on a back road

VERSE 2:

He turned off road ‘cross a muddy field and parked

It was black as sin out there in the dark

Moonlight glistened through a jug of glass

A birthday gift from his uncle’s private stash

Kept beneath the seat, just in case

Couldn’t wait to get my first taste

Wild cherry moonshine, in the summer heat

I lost my mind and my innocence in the back seat

CHORUS:

I lost more than a hat

On that old country back road

I thought I’d found everything

My young heart could hold

But looking back down that back road again

I can’t get back what I lost in red dust on the wind

So much lost on a back road

VERSE 3:

There was no denying the sign on the stick

Up nights sick with worry, mornings just sick

Labor Day weekend I broke the news

I could never do what he wanted me to

For the last time, he drove me home

Left me to do this all alone

My dreams took a back seat and disappeared

Along with his taillights through my prism of tears

CHORUS (EXTENDED):

I lost more than a hat

On that old country back road

I thought I’d found everything

My young heart could hold

But looking back down that back road again

I can’t get back what I lost in red dust on the wind

So much lost on a back road

His hat, my innocence, my hopes and my dreams

‘Cause young love ain’t always all that it seems

So much lost on a back road

(repeat to fade)
