Late Bloomer

Late Bloomer (Copyright, Eric Larson, 2019)

Ruby never touched a paintbrush ‘til she was 65

Had her kids real young and never found the time

But when the kids were grown

And had families of their own

She noticed that her life was black and white

Hank never wrote a single word, til they gave his gold watch

He’d spent his whole life working and living by the clock

When he finally had some time

Morning, noon and night

Could see that was time passing much faster than he thought

Late bloomer, ripe on the vine

Late bloomer, time to shine

Late bloomer, no excuse

The hour is late so it’s

Time to bloom

Ruby bought herself a brush and canvas, acrylics in a set

Determined to give color to the years that she had left

Her friends and family told her

She had no artistic bones

She was living in a fantasy or she was just too old

Hank got himself a Smith Carona typewriter for his desk

He wanted to put words to the pictures in his head

His colleagues told him act your age

But Hank he just kept at the page

I’d much prefer to fail than leave anything unsaid

Late bloomer, ripe on the vine

Late bloomer, time to shine

Late bloomer, no excuse

The hour is late so it’s

Time to bloom

Ruby lived another twenty-seven years

Hank, he hit a hundred before he dissapeared

They never knew they couldn’t

Do just what they wanted

Never saw no reason they should fear

Late bloomer, ripe on the vine

Late bloomer, time to shine

Late bloomer, no excuse

The season’s short it’s

Time to bloom
